Cape Town’s football fraternity is in mourning following the tragic passing of Naseem “Nino” Petersen, a gifted local player and beloved family man.

The Kewtown resident and father of two died surrounded by loved ones after spending two weeks in hospital. He had been shot in a drive-by incident, reportedly a case of mistaken identity.
Since the news broke, social media has been flooded with tributes from teammates, coaches, friends and family, who remember Nino as a humble, passionate footballer with a constant smile and unwavering dedication.

Nino joined third-division club Young Pirates in late October 2025. Coach Roger Fortune described him as determined and hardworking, quickly embraced by the team, including a warm welcome from the club’s legendary Mama Pirates.
Despite his short time at the club, Nino made a lasting impression with his positive attitude and on-field presence. He was on the verge of making his official debut before the festive break, and was expected to become a key player.

Young Pirates and the broader football community say Nino will be deeply missed, with his memory living on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Cape Coast News sends condolences to the Petersen and Jacobs families.
