Moulana Mustaqeem Wanza Fatally Shot Outside Lentegeur Mosque

Western Cape:- The sacred first night of Ramadan turned heartbreaking in Lentegeur when Moulana Mustaqeem Wanza was fatally shot outside Salaamudien Masjid shortly after Taraweeh prayers.Worshippers gather for Taraweeh prayer in a Mosque, a nightly ritual during Ramadan that fosters Unity & Devotion – a stark contrast of the violence that unfolding afterwards

The community is in deep mourning over the loss of a respected spiritual figure during what should have been a time of peace and devotion.

According to the official notice from the Salaamudien Masjid Imaamat and Committee, the incident occurred moments after the evening prayers ended. “It is with profound shock and deep sadness that we confirm that Ml Mustaqeem Wanza was shot outside our masjid shortly after Taraweeh this evening and has since passed away,” the statement reads.

The masjid extended heartfelt condolences: “We extend our heartfelt and deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and the broader community. We ask Allah to grant him complete maghfirah, to envelop him in His infinite mercy, to accept him amongst the righteous, and to grant his family sabr, strength, and ease during this extremely painful time. Our du’as remain with them and all those affected.”

At this stage, confirmed details about the circumstances remain limited.

The committee stressed: “The Masjid Imaamat and Committee does not have any confirmed details regarding the circumstances of the incident.  We therefore cannot comment further. We respectfully urge the community to refrain from speculation and from sharing unverified information.  Qari Moosa Leak and Haafith Ilyaas Sauls are unharmed.”

They have called on authorities to conduct a full investigation while trusting due process. The notice, signed by Acting Imaam for Ramadan Ust.

Muhsin Ahmad Sulaiman (contact: 060 924 7532), appealed for unity: “We ask Allah to protect our masjid, our community, and to keep us united in patience, dignity, and steadfastness.

Moulana Wanza was remembered by congregants as a dedicated leader whose presence brought comfort and guidance. “This is devastating, especially on the opening night of Ramadan,” one local shared. “We go to the masjid for peace,  not this kind of pain.”

The tragedy has raised safety concerns in the area, with many urging calm and support for the family.
