As Firefighters Battle Relentless Flames

Firefighters in the Cape Winelands have been battling multiple wildfires since last night, with strong winds and dry conditions making containment efforts extremely difficult.

The most severe fire started on Oaklands Farm above Wellington, where gale-force winds and dense eucalyptus vegetation fueled its rapid spread. By early this morning, the fire had jumped Slangrivier Road and moved into the Bo-Hermon area, leaving destruction in its wake. Despite the best efforts of emergency crews, a home and two sheds were destroyed, and two cottages had to be evacuated. Fortunately, fire services managed to save these structures.

Landowners were urged to unlock access gates to allow fire crews to move freely and respond effectively. Reports indicate damage to crops, though the full extent remains unclear. Firefighting helicopters are currently grounded due to high winds, further complicating containment efforts.

Meanwhile, the Boontjiesrivier fire near Wolseley has been contained, but crews remain on high alert for flare-ups. NCC Wildfires, Witzenberg Municipality Fire Services, and other partners have been actively engaged in monitoring and mop-up operations.

One firefighter sustained injuries at Lateganskop, but no further casualties have been reported.

With temperatures expected to soar today, authorities have banned all controlled burning, even for those with valid permits. A new fire has also been reported in the Koue Bokkeveld, though details remain scarce.

Fire services will provide further updates as the situation develops.

Residents are urged to stay alert and cooperate with emergency teams to prevent further devastation.
