CAPE TOWN:- A series of swift police operations across the city led to multiple arrests and the seizure of illegal firearms, as law enforcement intensified efforts to curb violent crime.
On Wednesday, 26 March 2025, officers from the Western Cape Public Order Policing Unit were conducting stop-and-search operations in Sneeuberg Street, Heideveld, in response to ongoing gun violence in the area. During the operation, police spotted a suspicious individual who attempted to flee upon seeing them. Officers gave chase, apprehended the suspect, and conducted a search. A 9mm pistol and ammunition were found in his possession.
The suspect, a 17-year-old male, was unable to provide a valid firearm license and was immediately arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Authorities believe that proactive policing measures like these play a crucial role in reducing firearm-related crime in communities affected by gang violence.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the Cape Town K9 Unit arrested three suspects in Wetton Road for possession of a hijacked vehicle. Acting on intelligence, officers tracked a black Citroën that had been reported hijacked and was seen driving in the Claremont area. The vehicle was intercepted, and a search revealed not only the stolen car but also two firearms—a 9mm pistol and a revolver—along with ammunition.
All suspects are set to appear in the Athlone and Wynberg Magistrates’ Courts in the coming days. Law enforcement agencies have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling crime and ensuring safer communities for all residents.
