Cape Town — Tensions flared in Belhar on Sunday after allegations surfaced that a woman was raped by three men, at a house in the Self Help area, following her booking of an e-hailing driver.

The incident allegedly occurred at a residence on the corner of Tyne and St Vincent streets. Community members quickly mobilized, and multiple videos circulating on social media show a heavy police presence at the scene, with residents demanding justice.

One video shows a crowd gathered outside the house while SAPS members conduct a search. A white Hyundai, reportedly linked to one of the suspects, is seen with its passenger window smashed. In another clip, officers escort a handcuffed man from the property as voices from the crowd shout threats and obscenities, clearly expressing frustration and outrage.

Belhar Community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson Shireen Nordien confirmed that the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit is handling the matter.

“We understand that FCS engaged both the alleged victim and a suspect on Sunday,” Nordien stated. “As the Belhar CPF, we strongly condemn all forms of violence against women and children. We are hopeful that this matter will be handled with the seriousness and compassion it deserves.”

Despite community claims and the online uproar, SAPS said no official case had yet been registered.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie responded –  “Police have heard about the allegations but cannot confirm at this stage whether they are true, as no criminal cases have been opened by the alleged victim.”

The situation remains tense as community members await formal action. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward and report it through official channels.
