CAPE TOWN — After months of painful waiting and public outcry, the Western Cape High Court has found all three accused in the Joshlin Smith case guilty.
The judgment marks a pivotal moment in a case that has haunted South Africa since the six-year-old’s disappearance from Saldanha Bay in early 2024.
With the court’s verdict now clear, attention shifts to the sentencing phase, set to begin this Friday in Cape Town. The proceedings are expected to run for up to three days before moving to Saldanha Bay, where formal sentencing will be handed down.
The most serious charge, Charge 1, carries the possibility of life imprisonment.
Court observers and citizens across the country are waiting to see whether:
- The accused will attempt to appeal the verdict,
- Any new witnesses will be brought forward, or
- One of the convicted individuals will finally speak out and break the silence.
During previous proceedings, Kelly Smith, Joshlin’s mother, was seen allegedly making hand gestures toward law enforcement — reportedly signaling something about co-accused Steveno. Some witnesses claimed she urged officers to search him, though no official confirmation has been made by authorities on any follow-up action.
Despite the conviction, the search for Joshlin herself continues. Police confirmed that no new leads have emerged in recent weeks. However, SAPS remains committed to the investigation and assures the public that all credible information will be pursued until the case reaches full closure.
Joshlin’s disappearance struck a nerve across the nation, igniting candlelight vigils, social media campaigns, and emotional community appeals for her safe return. While the court’s decision brings some legal closure, for many, justice remains incomplete until Joshlin is found — and the truth is fully known.
“Joshlin’s absence is a wound in the heart of every South African parent. The courtroom has spoken, but our hearts are still crying out for answers,” said one community member outside court.
As the nation braces for final sentencing, South Africans are urged to remain vigilant, prayerful, and unified in the continued call for justice.
Joshlin Smith still matters – Let her name not be forgotten.
