Despite Police Crackdown on Illegal Gatherings
CCN Reporting
MANENBERG:- A 32-year-old man was fatally shot in Manenberg on Saturday night, during an illegal street gathering.
This is despite recent police efforts to clamp down on unauthorised street parties and gang-related violence.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 8:30 PM on June 14 in Kasougu Road, where a party was underway outside the victim’s residence. It is believed that the man was inside his home when an unidentified individual, suspected to be linked to a rival gang, called him outside.
Police spokesperson, Captain Ian Bennett, said:
“He stepped outside and engaged in a brief exchange with the suspect before shots were fired at close range in front of several people attending the street gathering.”
Bennett added that the victim attempted to retreat into his home but was followed by the gunman, who fired additional shots in full view of bystanders.
“Despite being surrounded by witnesses, no one has come forward with any information,” Bennett noted. “The suspect fled the scene on foot.”
The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body and a single shot to the head. He died at the scene.
The shooting occurred amid an ongoing zero-tolerance campaign by the Manenberg SAPS and Community Policing Forum (CPF) aimed at halting illegal street parties, known locally as “jolles,” which are often linked to gang activity.
Manenberg SAPS station commander Brigadier Jayce Naidoo had previously issued warnings to local gang leaders, urging them to cancel an “End of May Month” bash that had not received proper authorization. While some leaders reportedly agreed to comply with event regulations, Saturday’s incident highlights the persistent challenge of enforcing the law in gang-affected areas.
Bennett expressed concern over the community’s silence:
“If the Manenberg community truly wants to turn the tide against gangsterism and violence, this culture of silence must change.”
Despite the fatal shooting, loud music and socialising reportedly continued well into the night.
A murder investigation is underway. No arrests have been made.
