Our Children Should Not Suffer Due to Negligence

Reporter – George April

Sherwood Park, Cape Town – A tragic incident has highlighted the urgent need for proper maintenance in our public parks.

On Saturday, April 5, 2025, six-year-old Adyaan Benjamin suffered severe injuries while playing in Sherwood Park, when a swing snapped. The broken chain wrapped around his leg, leaving him suspended upside down. As he fell, his femur fractured in three places, causing significant pain and trauma. His face was bruised, and he suffered a serious eye injury.

Adyaan underwent a four-hour surgery on April 6, 2025, at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Surgeons inserted two plates and four pins into his leg, and he is now unable to walk for at least a month. He remains hospitalized until he completes his physiotherapy and is strong enough to return home.

This devastating event has affected not just Adyaan but his entire family. The unexpected hospitalization has disrupted their daily lives, requiring them to be by his side for the next month. This kind of incident should never happen in a place meant for joy and recreation.

Urgent Action Needed

The community is now calling for immediate action to ensure all parks in Sherwood Park and surrounding areas are inspected and properly maintained before another tragedy occurs. Until necessary repairs and safety checks are conducted, residents are strongly urged to prevent their children from using the park facilities.

We cannot afford to risk another child suffering severe injuries—or worse. Parks should be safe havens, not hazards.

We wish Adyaan a speedy recovery and hope that authorities take swift action to prevent any future tragedies.
