VRYGROND – Amid a surge in gun violence in the Vrygrond area, police have arrested a suspect for the illegal possession of ammunition.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court soon.
Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie confirmed that the arrest took place on Tuesday during crime-combatting patrols conducted by Operation Shanela officers in Vrygrond and Capricorn.
“Members patrolling the taxi rank noticed a suspicious man who attempted to evade them. They pursued and apprehended him. Upon searching him, they discovered a 9mm Norinco pistol along with ammunition. The suspect was unable to produce a valid firearm license or competency certificate and was taken into custody,” Pojie said.
Authorities continue to increase their presence in the area to curb ongoing violence and illegal firearm possession.
