“Collision leads to unexpected catch”
GORDON’S BAY:- A routine response to a car crash on Faure Marine Road, took a dramatic turn when law enforcement officers uncovered five bags of abalone hidden in one of the vehicles.
According to SAPS spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana, the incident occurred at approximately 06:40 when a white Mercedes-Benz collided with a white Daihatsu. As officers and traffic authorities arrived at the scene—joined by private security personnel—they noticed suspicious activity involving the occupants of the Mercedes.
“The adult driver and a 14-year-old passenger allegedly jumped out of the vehicle and fled following the crash,” said Manyana.
Upon further investigation of the Mercedes, police discovered five large bags of abalone (perlemoen) concealed inside. The street value of the illegal marine resource is still to be confirmed by Sea Fisheries officers, who were also dispatched to the scene.
– Quick follow-up work by Gordon’s Bay SAPS led to the arrest of both suspects, who were later traced and detained on charges of illegal possession of abalone.
The driver of the Daihatsu sustained injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
– “The suspects will appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court once formally charged,” confirmed Manyana.
This case highlights the continued exploitation of marine life along the Western Cape coastline and the critical role of integrated policing in tackling environmental crime.
