The 68-year-old was allegedly stabbed to death and robbed in what police suspect was a targeted attack.
According to SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant-General Malcolm Pojie, two suspects — aged 16 and 18 — were arrested just hours after the incident. The breakthrough came after the pair were reportedly seen driving around in the victim’s vehicle, raising immediate suspicion.
Police moved quickly and detained the two teenagers for questioning. While investigations are still ongoing, robbery is believed to be the likely motive behind the attack.
Mr. Cloete was a respected figure in the community, known not only for his long career in education but also for his humble presence and willingness to help others. His tragic death has left residents heartbroken and demanding justice.
Editorial Comment – A Symptom of a Failing System
Even if the suspects claim they “didn’t know” the victim was dead, the very act of casually driving around in his car after an assault speaks volumes. It shows not just a lack of remorse, but a deeper issue – blatant disrespect for the rule of law.
This is where South Africa’s justice system stands today: mocked, undermined, and seen as powerless. Violent crimes are no longer followed by fear of consequence, but often with smug indifference.
Until this country restores real accountability, not only in the courtroom but in the minds of its people – tragedies like Mr. Cloete’s will continue, and justice will remain a broken promise.
