Confusion and Concern as BT Football Academy Faces Public Scrutiny

Western Cape:- A group of 25 young footballers and three coaches from BT Football Academy in Cape Town are currently stranded in Lisbon, Portugal, after participating in the prestigious Donosti Cup 2025 tournament.
What was meant to be a dream experience has quickly turned into a desperate wait for assistance and public outcry is growing.
Two conflicting narratives have emerged.
In a formal media release issued on 20 July, BT Football Academy stated that all preparations for the international tour, including visas, accommodation, tournament fees, and travel were paid in full. However, visa delays forced the group to secure flight tickets just days before departure, making return bookings unaffordable due to skyrocketing prices. The academy claims to have reached out for government assistance before departure, without success, and is now funding extended accommodation and meals out of pocket while seeking solutions.
However, a Facebook post circulating widely paints a different picture. Shared by community member Lillian Plessis, the post claims that the children were left “without return flights home, having paid [the academy] in advance for the trip.” It adds that visas are close to expiring and that the TRACEY LANGE CARES initiative is urgently appealing for donations to assist with return flight costs.
While investigations are reportedly underway to hold those responsible accountable, the most urgent concern is the safety and swift return of the children to South Africa. Communication has been limited, and emotions are running high among parents and supporters back home.
