BELLVILLE:- A major police breakthrough has been made in the fight against illegal firearms in the Western Cape.
In the early hours of this Monday morning, September 22nd, members of the Provincial Operational Coordination Combat Team executed an intelligence-driven raid on a Bellville flat, uncovering a significant cache of weapons.
According to police, the firearms were transported from KwaZulu-Natal to Cape Town. The search of the premises resulted in the confiscation of six AK-47 rifles, eight 9mm pistols, and a quantity of ammunition. None of the occupants were able to provide valid licences or permits for the weapons.
Eight adult males were arrested on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. They remain in custody and are expected to make their first court appearance in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court once formally charged.
Provincial police management praised the swift and coordinated action of the team, noting that the removal of these weapons has likely prevented them from being used in serious violent crimes.
“This operation demonstrates our ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of our communities by removing illegal firearms from circulation,” said police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut.
The investigation is ongoing.
