Than We Ever Had – So Why Complain?”
Every day, I hear the same stories on the streets:
“I can’t find work.”
“I’ve handed in my CV at so many places.”
And more painful than that – “It’s only a certain colour that gets the jobs.”
“I understand those frustrations because I hear them almost daily.” “But sometimes I wonder, do we really see the full picture?”
When I grew up, there were very few opportunities. There were no free training colleges or community skills programs like we have today. We had to fight just to get a small chance, often without guidance, without connections, and with very limited education.
Today, there are government programs, community training centres, and non-profit organisations that offer free education and skills training. From welding to construction, IT, and more, these doors are open. Yet many of our young people walk past them, waiting for a miracle job to appear.
That’s the part that breaks my heart. Because the truth is, the opportunities are there – we just need to use them.
I’m not saying life is easy. Far from it. But complaining won’t bring change. Action will. Commitment will. And education – no matter how late you start – will open doors you didn’t know existed.
We as parents and mentors must stop blaming colour, luck, or the system for everything. Yes, the system is not perfect – but our children have something we never had: options.
Let’s guide them to take those opportunities. Let’s push them to apply for that free course, to finish school, to learn a trade, to stand up and work for a better life.
Life will always be heavy if we wait for someone else to carry the load.
But the moment we decide to lift it ourselves – that’s when change begins.
