During City Project in Philippi
By CCN News Desk
PHILIPPI:- Two armed security guards were shot and killed in broad daylight, during a City of Cape Town sewer repair operation in Phola Park on Tuesday, 22 April 2025.
According to initial reports, the team was escorting municipal workers to a toilet block, when four gunmen launched a coordinated ambush. Two suspects approached the city vehicle, while the other two moved in on the toilet area. Gunfire erupted, killing both security officers on site.
The City confirmed the incident and believes the attack was linked to ongoing extortion efforts, targeting public infrastructure projects.
“This was not random,” said one city official. “It was a calculated act of intimidation against those trying to deliver basic services to our communities.”
The shooting is part of a growing pattern of violent attacks on security personnel and city contractors, raising concerns about worker safety and the future of critical service delivery in high-risk areas.
The tragedy also comes amid controversial discussions about new national regulations that could further restrict the use of firearms by private security guards. A move critics fear will embolden armed gangs.
No arrests have yet been made. Police have opened a double murder case, aaa and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
