Of Man Accused of Raping 9-Year-Old Girl

Cape Town:- The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Major General Bongani Maqashalala, attended the court appearance today of a 51-year-old suspect accused of raping a 9-year-old girl in Hanover Park.
His presence sent a strong message of support to the victim and the community, affirming the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) commitment to protecting children and pursuing justice without compromise.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday evening, 13 May 2025, during an integrated operation conducted in Johnvlei Walk, Hanover Park. A community plagued by poverty, gang violence, and social breakdown, where children are increasingly vulnerable to abuse.
Although the suspect was originally set to appear in court on 15 May, new developments in the case led to a postponement, and his first formal appearance took place today.
This case has shaken the community, especially following the recent police statistics released by former Police Minister Bheki Cele, which revealed that more than 2,000 children were seriously assaulted across South Africa in just a three-month period, between September and December 2024.
Community activists, parents, and advocacy groups are once again calling for-
- Harsher sentences for child rapists and abusers
- No bail for sexual violence suspects
- Increased child protection units and trauma support services
- Government-led community safety programs in high-risk areas
“This is not just a police issue, it is a national crisis. We cannot turn away while our children are being destroyed,” said a community member outside the courtroom.
