Between Tronox and Lutzville Community Ahead of Planned Protest
CCN Reporter – George April
Vredendal:- In a bid to ease tensions and prevent a planned protest, Matzikama Municipality has invited Tronox Executive Management to an urgent engagement meeting with Lutzville community representatives on Monday.
The municipality is stepping in following the community’s submission of a Section 4 notification to hold a demonstration against Tronox Mineral Sands. The concerns centre on the level of support and assistance provided by the mining company during recent flooding and the broader disaster response in the area.
In a formal letter addressed to Tronox Executive Management, Disaster/Community Safety Officer Aubrey Keyster stated:
“In the interest of promoting constructive dialogue, maintaining good community relations, and seek an amicable resolution to the concerns raised, the municipality wishes to convene a meeting between all relevant parties before the proposed protest action takes place.”
Meeting Details:
Date: Monday, 29 June 2026
Time: 14:00
Venue: Vredendal Council Chambers
Matzikama Municipality will act as convener and facilitator of the meeting. Keyster emphasised that the engagement aims to give all parties an opportunity to present their perspectives and explore possible solutions in a respectful manner.
The municipality has requested confirmation of Tronox’s attendance by tomorrow.
Background
This latest development follows a strongly worded media statement from Lutzville and Lutzville-Wes (Ward 1) residents, in which they accused Tronox of failing to deliver on its Social and Labour Plan commitments, despite the community supplying a large portion (approximately 41%) of the company’s Namakwa Sands workforce.
Community members listed several grievances, including lack of visible infrastructure development, poor transparency on spending, and dissatisfaction with stakeholder engagement processes.
They made it clear that while the recent dispute over 450 food hampers drew attention, their core demands relate to long-term accountability, transparency, and equitable development.
The residents have warned they will pursue lawful and peaceful actions – including the planned march – if their concerns are not adequately addressed.
Community Safety Officer Keyster can be contacted on 027-2013439 or 063 074 0086, or via email at aubreyk@matzikama.gov.za
CCN will continue to monitor developments following Monday’s scheduled meeting.
