Three Illegal Firearms Seized, Multiple Suspects Arrested in 48 Hours

CCN Editor – George April

Cape Town: – In a clear demonstration of police determination to curb violent crime on the Cape Flats, Western Cape law enforcement officers confiscated three prohibited firearms and arrested several suspects over the weekend. The swift actions, driven by community tip offs and proactive policing, have been hailed as a vital step in making neighbourhoods safer.

Nyanga: Armed robber traced within minutes

Just after midnight on Sunday, 30 November, members of Operation Restore were conducting stop-and-search operations in Browns Farm when residents reported that they had just been robbed by three armed men. Community members gave a detailed description of one of the suspects.

Minutes later, officers spotted a man matching the description on Ngulube Road. When searched, the 21-year-old was found with a CZ 9mm pistol with no serial number tucked into his waistband. He could not produce a firearm licence and was immediately arrested. The weapon has been sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it has been used in other crimes.

Delft: Suspects flee, one caught with loaded revolver

Early on Sunday morning at 05:20, Delft Crime Prevention Unit members on patrol in The Hague noticed three suspicious men loitering on the corner of Heathrow Street. When the group saw the police vehicle, they scattered. Officers gave chase and managed to apprehend one suspect.

A search revealed a .38 Special revolver – again with the serial number removed, loaded with four rounds of ammunition.  The 21-year-old man was arrested on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal ammunition.

Eerste River: Intelligence leads to hidden pistol on rooftop

On Saturday, 29 November, members of the provincial Anti-Gang Unit, acting on intelligence, raided a property in Mani Crescent, Forest Village, Blue Downs. Although no suspects were found at the premises, a thorough search uncovered a 9mm Luger M80 pistol with no serial number hidden on the roof. The firearm was seized and an investigation docket opened.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone and Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Courts this week facing charges of possession of prohibited and unlicensed firearms, and in one case, illegal possession of ammunition.

Commissioner: “Every gun off the street is a life saved”

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile,  praised the officers involved and reiterated the SAPS commitment to removing illegal weapons from circulation.

“Every firearm we take out of the hands of criminals is potentially a life saved,” Lt Gen Patekile said. “These arrests and confiscations show what can be achieved when police work hand-in-hand with vigilant communities. We will not rest until our people can walk their streets without fear.”

Residents in Nyanga, Delft and Eerste River have welcomed the operations, with many saying the visible police presence and rapid response to community reports are starting to restore confidence.

One Browns Farm resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, said:  “When those guys robbed people right here in our street, we phoned the police straight away.  Within minutes they had one of them.   That’s the kind of policing we need,  they listen and they act fast.”

Police have urged the public to continue sharing information about illegal firearms and wanted suspects through the MySAPS app or by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Tip-offs can be made anonymously and all information will be treated confidentially.
