ELSIES RIVER:- An intelligence-driven operation by members of Elsies River SAPS has resulted in the recovery of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and more than 1,000 Mandrax tablets during raids conducted in Epping Forest on Monday, 13 July 2026.
According to police, officers acted on information regarding an unlicensed firearm allegedly concealed at a house in Snaresbrook Road. At approximately 17:40, members searched the premises and recovered a firearm together with five rounds of ammunition. A 23-year-old man, believed to have links to a local gang, was arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
The operation continued later that evening to an address in Chigwell Street, where police reportedly discovered 1,013 Mandrax tablets in the possession of a 50-year-old male at approximately 20:00. Both suspects are expected to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court once they have been formally charged.
The successful operation forms part of ongoing SAPS efforts to remove illegal firearms and drugs from communities in an effort to combat gang-related crime and drug trafficking.

The operation drew mixed reactions on social media, with many residents praising police for removing dangerous weapons and drugs from the streets.
Some commenters called for tougher action against those involved in serious crime, including stricter bail conditions and harsher penalties for convicted offenders. Others commended police members for their continued efforts in targeting illegal firearms and drug dealers.
While many welcomed the arrests, several community members stressed that sustained law enforcement operations would be necessary to make a lasting impact on crime in affected neighbourhoods.
