Reporter – George April

Cape Town:- South African National Parks (SANParks) has issued fines to members of religious groups accused of illegally lighting fires in Table Mountain National Park over the weekend.

The blaze broke out on Saturday above Boyes Drive in the Peck’s Valley area. Following an investigation,  SANParks rangers found multiple groups performing rituals involving fire,  a direct violation of park regulations.

“They were removed from the area and fined for breaching fire safety laws,” said SANParks spokesperson JP Louw. He confirmed that cleanup operations are still underway and urged the public to avoid nearby hiking trails until further notice.

A volunteer firefighter from Wildfire Services was treated for smoke inhalation. Fortunately, the fire was contained quickly and caused no property damage.
