Cape Town:- Popular shopping destinations like the V&A Waterfront and Canal Walk are stepping up security following a spike in incidents involving teenagers, including fights that have sparked safety concerns.

The latest incident at the V&A Waterfront saw two girls allegedly involved in a physical altercation, causing panic as groups of youngsters were seen running through the mall. This comes as schools wrap up exams and young people flock to entertainment hubs.

V&A Waterfront spokesperson Donald Kau confirmed that strict measures are in place to curb violence. “We have a dedicated safety strategy that includes taking statements, issuing written warnings, and sharing video evidence with SAPS if needed,” Kau said. He added that extra security personnel have been deployed to monitor areas where large groups tend to gather.

The mall has a history of similar incidents. In 2021, a young man was stabbed during a confrontation at the Waterfront.

Meanwhile, Canal Walk is also preparing for the holiday influx. Marketing Manager Vanessa Herbst urged parents to accompany their children. “We are increasing visible and undercover security to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all,” she said.

Authorities and mall management have stressed that ensuring safety is a shared responsibility.
