Cape Town:- Efforts by police to curb the circulation of illegal firearms in the Western Cape once again yielded results, with members of the Anti-Gang Unit making several arrests in Delft and Kleinvlei this week.
On 30 September 2025, officers on foot patrol in the Delft South Informal Settlement discovered 19 rounds of ammunition abandoned in the area.
While following up on further information, the unit noticed a suspicious man attempting to flee as they approached a property. The suspect tried to gain entry to the premises and threw a firearm onto the roof in an attempt to conceal it. Police caught up with the man and retrieved a 9mm short pistol with seven rounds. A 31-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
In another incident later that day, police searched a residence in Wolga Street, Delft South, where they confiscated a revolver. A 59-year-old man was arrested after failing to produce a valid firearm license.
Meanwhile, on Monday, 29 September 2025, the unit received intelligence about a firearm being stored in Spandau, Kleinvlei. A search of a wendy house at the address led to the recovery of a 9mm pistol with its serial number removed, along with six rounds of ammunition hidden beneath the floorboards. A 33-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
Police spokesperson Colonel Harry Brickles commended the swift action of the Anti-Gang Unit and called on communities to play their part:
> “Illegal firearms are at the heart of violent crime in our province. Every weapon we remove from the streets potentially saves a life. We urge the public to report those who store or trade in these firearms—your information can help protect families and save communities from further bloodshed.”
