Allegedly Intoxicated LEAP Officer

Reporter – George April

Cape Town: – A Clarke Estate family is struggling to come to terms with the loss of their three-year-old son, who was allegedly run over by an intoxicated LEAP officer over the weekend. What began as a joyful family celebration ended in heartbreak when little Cairi Jordaan was struck and driven over while sitting on the pavement, reportedly enjoying a piece of cake. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday.  There are claims that the officer was under the influence at the time of the crash.  The child was rushed to hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

A video of the grieving mother, Jolene Jordaan, has gone viral on Facebook, where she shares her pain in an emotional interview with Dalton De Jong from KFM.

“I was in the kitchen and didn’t see what happened,” she said. “But people standing outside saw how the man drove over Cairi – over his head and his entire body, with one side of the vehicle’s wheels.  This happened while Cairi was sitting on the pavement, enjoying his cake.”

According to Jolene, both her daughter and the child’s father remain in deep shock.

“My daughter is not doing well,” she added. “She had to receive an injection from her doctor to calm down.  It’s been very hard for all of us.”

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed the incident, stating that a case has been registered after a three-year-old boy was run over by a vehicle.

“The child later died in hospital from his injuries.  The incident is currently under police investigation,” Van Wyk said. He appealed to anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

According to De Jong, the City has remained tight-lipped about the matter,  saying only that an internal investigation is underway.

Alongside the viral video, a Facebook post by Steve Ross expressed the deep sorrow many in the community feel:

“Over the years,  I’ve visited many homes to comfort grieving families, but this tragedy was one of the hardest.  Words cannot heal a broken heart – only God can, in His time.  My heart bleeds as though he were my own family.  Let’s keep them in our prayers as they prepare for the funeral.”

The community of Clarke Estate remains in shock as they rally around the Jordaan family during this devastating time.
