Western Cape:- A Cape Town minibus taxi driver is still on the run after a dramatic attempt to evade law enforcement ended in a collision that left twelve people injured on Tuesday.
According to City of Cape Town Traffic Services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs, an officer attempted to pull the driver over on Koeberg Road during routine traffic monitoring. Instead of complying, the driver accelerated and fled towards the N1, triggering a rapid response call for backup.
The chase continued to the N7 near Potsdam Road, where the fleeing taxi crashed into two traffic patrol vehicles. In the chaos that followed, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, leaving behind his passengers.
Eight passengers, along with four traffic officers, sustained minor injuries during the incident. Emergency services attended to those hurt, while the vehicle was later impounded by authorities.
Jacobs confirmed that the owner of the minibus has been traced, and that the taxi will not be released until the suspect is apprehended. He emphasized that reckless and unlawful behaviour on the roads will not be tolerated.
“The City will not tolerate the driver’s disregard for law and order,” Jacobs said.
Traffic Services have launched efforts to locate the driver and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
