The Heart-Wrenching Tragedy of Shanice Chantè Rudolph

CCN News

Cape Town: –  Shanice Chante “Niecey” Rudolph, 23, from Lavender Hill, was last seen alive in Ouboet Street, Cafda, Retreat. She was four months pregnant with her first child and had been in a relationship with her boyfriend for about six months. Family members say she was lured out of her home by him that evening; she briefly returned home but left again with him later that night and never came back. Shanice was described by her sister Rushaan Muller as “bubbly, always smiling, soft-spoken, and someone who loved to laugh, eat, and make jokes”.

The kind of person who lit up a room and didn’t deserve this.

Her family grew worried when she didn’t return by late evening (past 9 p.m.), and by the next morning, they felt something was terribly wrong. They reported her missing at Steenberg SAPS that day. Police initially advised waiting 24 hours, suspecting a possible argument, but the family pushed for action.

Body Discovery

Following a tip-off and “pointing out” by a vital witness (aided by police, neighbourhood watch, and missing person’s groups like Faith and Hope), her decomposed body was found in a shallow grave at Klip Road Cemetery in Grassy Park around 1:10 p.m. It was buried on top of another female corpse in an existing grave, which deepened the horror.

Reports confirm a second body was uncovered beneath hers during recovery efforts. Investigators believe she was killed elsewhere (possibly struck on the head with a spade, causing a head injury), placed in a vehicle boot, and then buried at the cemetery to hide the crime.  A murder case was immediately registered at Grassy Park SAPS, then transferred to Steenberg for deeper investigation.

Suspects and Court Update

Primary Suspect: Ashwin Davids, 42, Shanice’s boyfriend and father of her unborn child, was arrested on Sunday, December 8, after questioning. He allegedly claimed car trouble (his vehicle was at a mechanic) as a reason for not returning her home, but family disputes the timeline.  He’s charged with murder and appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court today.

A second suspect, a 23-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, December 11, bringing new layers to the case.  His exact role or charges aren’t fully detailed yet, but he’s linked to the murder investigation, and. he joined Davids in court today.

Court Drama

The hearing was chaotic, a bomb scare caused an evacuation of the courthouse. Davids indicated he’d apply for bail, but the case was postponed to December 18 for the formal application. No bail was granted today, and emotions ran high with family and supporters present.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed both arrests to the media, emphasizing the ongoing probe into motives.  (believed personal, tied to the relationship).

Family’s Heartbreak and Statements

Shanice’s loved ones are in unimaginable pain, they’d been planning a joyful Christmas lunch together, dreaming of her as a mom. Her mother clutched a photo of her smiling daughter in court, trembling as she whispered, “She is Not Gone”

She is coming home,” unable to accept the reality even now.  A relative shared, “To have someone in your house, and for so much harm to be brought to the person that we all cherished and loved, it is hard.  We cannot explain the pain. She was pregnant with the accused’s child.”

Her sister Rushaan added that Shanice had always adored kids, treating her nieces and nephews like her own, and was excited to become a mother: “This is going to be a tragic Christmas for the family.”  The family has expressed fears for their safety in Lavender Hill and is grappling with betrayal, as Shanice had mentioned her partner’s insecurity and possessiveness before.

The Rumor of the Second Body

Another body buried beneath hers” aren’t just rumours, they’re backed by multiple reports. Her grave was dug atop an existing one containing another female corpse, which was uncovered during exhumation.  This has amplified community outrage, raising questions about cemetery security. Especially after a recent grave robbery nearby, involving 72-year-old Lillian Jacobs.

Police haven’t released the second victim’s identity or if it’s connected, but it’s part of the intensified probe.

Broader Context

This tragedy hit right at the end of “South Africa’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence”, spotlighting the femicide crisis, activists like Siya Monakali from Ilitha Labantu call it “shocking” that declarations of emergency haven’t led to real safety changes. The City of Cape Town says cemetery crimes are rising, and they’re assisting SAPS, but families want more action.
