Lobster Bust, Unexplained Death, and Fatal Gang Shooting

Cape Coast News Reporting

The Cape Flats continues to see a mix of serious criminal activity, from environmental crimes to violent incidents. Illegal Possession of Thousands of Rock Lobster Tails in Bishop Lavis

On Tuesday, a 35-year-old man was arrested in Bishop Lavis for the illegal possession of 3,162 West Coast Rock Lobster tails.

City Law Enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason explained that officers from the Enforcement Marine and Environmental Unit spotted the man acting suspiciously during a patrol. They requested permission to enter his property, which he granted.  Inside, a strong fishy smell prompted questions about selling fish, which he denied.

A search revealed fridges packed with blue bags full of the lobster tails.

The suspect was detained at Bishop Lavis SAPS, and all the illegal seafood was confiscated. This bust highlights ongoing efforts to crack down on poaching and illegal trade in protected marine species.

Unidentified Woman’s Body Found at Breerivier Secondary School

On Saturday, 22 February 2026, at around 13:55, police responded to a report of a body discovered on the premises of Breerivier Secondary School. Officers found the body of an unidentified female wearing yellow pants and a white T-shirt. The cause of death remains unknown at this stage.

An inquest docket has been opened, and investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances.

Gang-Related Drive-By Shooting Claims Life in Lavender Hill

In a tragic escalation of gang violence, a 24-year-old man was gunned down and two others injured in a suspected gang-related drive-by shooting in Lavender Hill on Tuesday evening (24 February).

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk reported that Steenberg SAPS attended the scene at the corner of St Christopher and St George Street around 7pm. They found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds on the pavement. Two other males (aged 22 and 53) were rushed to hospital for treatment.

A case of murder and two counts of attempted murder has been registered, with the motive believed to be gang-related.

Steenberg Community Policing Forum Chairperson Nicola Small condemned the incident: “The area is understandably tense, and residents deserve to feel safe in their homes and streets.  Nothing changes if nothing changes. Young men are losing their lives on our streets, and we can’t stay silent if we want this cycle of violence to stop.”

She urged anyone with information to contact Steenberg SAPS or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
