As Police Seize Illegal Mining Equipment

CCN Reporting

GAUTENG:-  A major multi-agency operation targeting illegal mining across Gauteng has led to the arrest of 35 illegal immigrants suspected of being involved in illicit mining activities, while authorities also confiscated a large quantity of equipment used in illegal mining operations. The arrests were made during Operation Prosper/Operation Karabo, conducted between 19 and 26 June 2026, as law enforcement agencies intensified efforts to dismantle illegal mining networks operating across the province.

The operation brings together members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) and other law enforcement partners in a coordinated campaign against illegal mining.

During the week-long operation, officers recovered a substantial cache of equipment allegedly used by illegal miners. The seized items included 68 phendukas, six generators, 10 electrical motors, 13 phenduka stands, six stampers, eight steel pot crushers, two gas bottles, water pumps and seven spades.

Police also confiscated alcohol during the operation and arrested three individuals for allegedly dealing in liquor without the required license.

Authorities say the ongoing operations form part of a broader strategy to disrupt illegal mining syndicates, safeguard communities and protect the country’s mineral resources from criminal exploitation.

SAPS confirmed that Operation Prosper/Operation Karabo will continue across Gauteng as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute those involved in illegal mining and related criminal activities.
