Chess – More than just a Game –
Chess is a classic strategy game that has fascinated people of all ages for centuries.

The champion chess player – Jaydene Farmer with her principal, Mr Paul Haricombe from Diazville High School

It is not only a form of entertainment, but also an activity that has many benefits for children and teenagers, especially in schools. One of our own young talented players, Jaydean Farmer from Diazville High School in Saldanha Bay, has been selected to participate in the South African Junior Closed Chess Championships (SAJCCC) 2025! She will be competing in the second round of the Mzansi tournament and will represent the Western Cape team while playing for SA Attire.

This prestigious tournament takes place at Hottentots Holland High School in Somerset West, and it is a remarkable milestone for any young chess player.

What is chess and why is it important?

Chess is a strategic game where two players use 16 pieces each to checkmate the opposing king. It requires planning, problem solving and a lot of patience.

For scholars, chess has many benefits:
Improves concentration – Players must think ahead and make strategic decisions.
Develops probe- solving skills – Every move must be carefully considered, which improves critical thinking.
Builds self-confidence – By learning strategy and achieving success, children gain more self-confidence.
Helps with math and logical thinking – It improves pattern recognition and analytical skills.
Learn patience and perseverance – Chess teaches children to be calm and patient, even in difficult situations.

We wish Jaydean all the best for this important tournament!

May this experience not only sharpen her playing skills, but also strengthen her perseverance and self-confidence.

Jaydene, the West Coast Community is all very proud of her!
