From Global Concerns to Local Solutions

As young people around the world step up to discuss their future, it’s inspiring to see students in Australia engaging with the 2025 Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations, Satara Uthayakumaran. Their discussions covered pressing issues such as climate change, healthcare access in rural areas, international conflicts, and the effects of AI and social media—challenges that aren’t limited to one country but are felt worldwide, including right here in South Africa.
Just yesterday, during a local school meeting, students voiced similar concerns. While the setting may be different, the struggles are strikingly familiar. Young people in our communities are worried about the lack of opportunities, rising unemployment, the impact of social media on mental health, and the increasing effects of climate change—especially in rural areas where droughts and extreme weather threaten livelihoods. Some students expressed their frustration about job prospects after school, while others raised concerns about how AI might change the job market before they even enter it. These are real fears, and they deserve real solutions.
The fact that Australian youth are preparing to bring their concerns to a global platform like the UN Youth Conference and the Evatt Competition shows the power of youth advocacy. But it also raises a crucial question: Where do our local youth get to voice their concerns? How can they be part of these global conversations?
Through initiatives like Engineering & Construction Skills Development NPC and Traid Construction Holdings Pty, we are working to create opportunities for young people to develop skills, secure jobs, and build a better future. However, their voices also need to be heard in decision-making spaces. More platforms are needed for them to express their concerns—whether about education, unemployment, or climate change—so that real solutions can be found.
This connection between global and local youth struggles is a reminder that young people everywhere are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the changemakers of today. The question is: How do we ensure they have the platforms, support, and opportunities to make a difference?
Now is the time to listen, empower, and act.
