SALDANHA BAY:- Day 8 of the Joshlin Smith trial has provided key testimony, offering insight into crucial moments following the child’s disappearance. The court heard from Joshlin’s teacher, who detailed her conversations with Kelly, Joshlin’s mother, in the aftermath of the case.

Teacher’s Testimony

Describing Joshlin as a quiet and withdrawn child, the teacher recalled a critical phone call to Kelly at approximately 17:30 on the day Joshlin was reported missing. During the call, Kelly was emotional and crying, but when asked where Joshlin had been the previous day, her demeanor suddenly changed—she stopped crying and remained silent. When the teacher repeated the question, Kelly still did not respond. Shortly after, the call was disconnected.

In a follow-up attempt on February 24, the teacher managed to reach Kelly again. This time, Kelly was deeply emotional, crying over the phone. The teacher reassured her that the school would assist in searching for Joshlin. However, before joining the search, the teacher made a stop at a local petrol station, where an unexpected encounter with Kelly took place.

Unexpected Meeting at Petrol Station

At the petrol station, Kelly approached the teacher, expressing fear about how the community would react to her. She then asked if she could confide in the teacher. Getting into the back of the teacher’s car, Kelly allegedly shared shocking new details. She claimed a Nigerian man had called her, telling her to act quickly because they were supposedly about to board a ship heading to West Africa.

Seeking clarification, the teacher questioned Kelly on how this man had obtained her number and how she knew for certain that he was Nigerian. The teacher also asked whether Kelly had reported this information to the police, but Kelly did not answer.

Kelly’s Statement About Boeta

During their conversation, Kelly also made a seemingly unsolicited statement: “Boeta has nothing to do with it. Boeta is not guilty.” This remark stood out, as there was no prior mention of Boeta in their discussion at that point.

When questioned about why her phone had been unavailable, Kelly explained that her battery had died, which had caused the earlier call to be disconnected.

Summary

The teacher’s testimony has introduced significant details regarding Kelly’s behavior and statements following Joshlin’s disappearance. Her conflicting emotions, abrupt silences, and references to a Nigerian caller and a ship raise further questions about the case. With the trial still unfolding, these revelations could play a crucial role in determining what really happened to Joshlin Smith.

More updates to follow as the trial progresses.
