Mitchells Plain: In a significant operation combating illegal firearms in the Western Cape, Mitchells Plain police arrested a 38-year-old male in Lentegeur on Friday during routine patrols on Tritonia Street on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
According to police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi, officers approached the suspect, who attempted to flee. After a brief chase, he was apprehended, and a subsequent search revealed a pistol with ammunition. This incident highlights ongoing efforts to address gun violence in the region.
This arrest is part of a broader strategy by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to tackle illegal firearms in Mitchells Plain. In March 2024, SAPS responded to a shooting on Falstaff Street, leading to the arrest of an assailant and the seizure of two 9mm pistols with ammunition. Later that evening, officers uncovered a prohibited .38 special revolver with ammunition in Beacon Valley, resulting in the detention of a 27-year-old man.
The proliferation of illegal firearms has been a persistent issue in the Western Cape, contributing to violence and instability. In November 2024, the Anti-Gang Unit conducted an intelligence-driven operation in Lentegeur, leading to the arrest of a 33-year-old female and a 38-year-old male. Officers recovered five firearms, including a CZ 9mm pistol, a .38 Special revolver, and a 6.35 CZ pistol, all with serial numbers removed, along with ammunition.
These coordinated efforts underscore SAPS’s commitment to dismantling illegal firearm networks and enhancing community safety. The arrested individuals are expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court facing charges related to the possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition.
