CAPE TOWN:- A tense atmosphere continues to grip the Somerset West taxi rank, as ongoing violence linked to Cape Town’s taxi dispute escalates. The latest wave of bloodshed has spread across the metro, with deadly consequences.
On Monday, tragedy struck in Winnie Mandela Street, Langa, where a man was found shot dead inside a minibus taxi.
“The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Monday, 09 June 2025, in Winnie Mandela Street, Langa, where an adult male was shot and fatally wounded, are under investigation. SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg
“The incident forms part of a broader conflict between two rival taxi associations, CATA and CODETA, who have been embroiled in a heated dispute over approved transport routes since last week.”
Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku visited the affected Public Transport Interchange (PTI) in Somerset West earlier today. Once a bustling hub, the rank now stands eerily quiet, vehicles are nowhere to be seen.
“According to the information available, CODETA Mfuleni to Bellville has the right to transport people from Mfuleni to Somerset West and back. However, that right hasn’t been exercised by CODETA for several years due to various reasons. In their absence, the service has been rendered by CATA Lwandle,”

Authorities are pinning their hopes on a high-level meeting scheduled for Thursday between CATA and CODETA. With commuter frustration mounting and the economic impact growing, officials are eager to find a solution that restores transport services and calms tensions.
