“Is This Apartheid or Just Doing the Job?”

Reporter – George April

Cape Town:- A viral Facebook post by user Yaz Asaz has ignited a heated online debate after praising Freedom Front Plus leader Pieter Groenewald for his unannounced inspection at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Facility,  where shocking discoveries were made.

Picture – Minister of Correctional Services –  praised by many for taking real action.

– According to the post, Groenewald uncovered

  • Cellphones
  • G-strings
  • Laptops
  • Cash
  • And illegal drugs

The post claimed that the head of the prison and several wardens will now face disciplinary action for their alleged involvement in smuggling and mismanagement.

But it was one controversial line in the post that caused a social media firestorm: “Man is bringing the apartheid back in prison.  He’s cooking 😭🔥🔥”

Many Facebook users jumped in to defend the raid and slam any comparison to apartheid, arguing that Groenewald and the Correctional Services Minister, who appears in a widely shared photo inspecting the prison,  are simply doing their jobs.

– Public Reactions

  •  Vicki De Villiers “That’s nonsense. He’s cleaning up the ROT and CORRUPTION.”
  •  Tshewa’s Motshewa: “If it’s apartheid, it’s a good one! In my life I never thought there could be such a thing as good and bad apartheid — this one is GOOD apartheid for a change. Bring it on! 🤣”
  •  Jabu Ntuli: “It’s not apartheid. It’s order. Our grandparents and parents fought for this. Well done, Minister!”
  • Lawrence Thiza Theko: “Apartheid, my foot! These people are not there to relax but to serve jail sentences. I welcome that kind of ‘apartheid’ in prison back with open arms!”

While the term “apartheid” stirred emotional responses, many commentators say it’s a mislabel. Instead, they say, it highlights the need for firm leadership, discipline, and a total purge of corruption in the country’s correctional system.

The Department of Correctional Services has yet to respond to the findings, but the public sentiment is clear: South Africans are demanding accountability, not excuses.

Is this a return to injustice – or a necessary return to order?
