Crime on the Cape Flats – How Long Must Communities Suffer?

Reporter – George C. April

Cape Flats: – Another harrowing incident shook the Malibu Village community this morning, as schoolchildren fell victim to a brazen hijacking.

A concerned resident shared the following message on a local WhatsApp crime alert group:

“Members, please be vigilant and inform the school transport drivers too.” “My granddaughter and other schoolmates were hijacked earlier here in Malibu.” “Thankfully, they are safe, along with the driver, who ran home to alert his colleagues, they are also police officers.

“Unfortunately, the vehicle was taken.”

This incident highlights what many already know: crime on the Cape Flats is spiralling out of control. Communities are living in fear, while criminals continue to operate with impunity.

A Broken System

It is time to confront a painful truth, South Africa’s justice system has become a joke to criminals. Offenders walk free while victims are left traumatised, with little to no support. The rights of criminals too often seem to outweigh those of innocent citizens.

Enough is enough.

We Call on Government

The national government can no longer turn a blind eye. The situation in areas like Malibu, Mitchells Plain, Delft, and surrounding Cape Flats communities is a daily nightmare. Residents live behind burglar bars, walk their children to school in fear, and pray not to become the next victim.

We call on the Department of Justice, the SAPS leadership, and President Cyril Ramaphosa himself to take urgent action.  We demand reforms, stronger police visibility, and a justice system that protects the innocent, not one that empowers criminals.
