Speaking through tears, Sibiya described the personal toll of the high-profile case, saying, “It was like my world collapsed,” as he detailed missing family milestones and the shock of being thrust into a criminal investigation that has captivated the nation.
The trial, which has been ongoing since the tragic killing of beloved footballer Senzo Meyiwa in 2014, has also been marked by delays and legal wrangling. Social media users have weighed in, with some criticizing the defense’s repeated requests for adjournments. One Facebook commenter noted that Advocate Charles Mnisi’s frequent delays, sometimes for months to familiarize himself with trial records – have “very often aggravated the judge” and risked prejudice against the accused.
Another user defended the lawyer, saying, “If he needs time and more time to do his job well and his client agrees to that, I don’t see any problem with it.”
Legal analysts say emotional testimony such as Sibiya’s provides a human perspective, often missing from headlines, showing the strain and vulnerability experienced by those involved in high-profile cases.
As the trial continues, the nation remains attentive, hoping for answers and clarity in a case that has remained one of South Africa’s most watched criminal proceedings.
