Cape Town:- The continued efforts of SAPS units across the Western Cape to stabilize crime-ridden communities are paying off, as several suspects were arrested and illegal firearms confiscated during recent operations.
On Thursday evening, 2 October 2025, members attached to Lingelethu-West SAPS were observing a memorial service of a known extortionist in Hobo Hobo Street, Ilitha Park, when they heard gunfire believed to be part of a “gun salute.” Officers immediately responded and noticed a suspect running toward a white Toyota while holding a firearm.
Police followed and apprehended the suspect inside the vehicle. A search led to the discovery of a revolver, two spent cartridges, and three live rounds of ammunition. The 22-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. A gun residue test was conducted, and further investigation revealed that the firearm belonged to a deceased person from Mbekweni, Wellington. The suspect was scheduled to appear in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court today, 6 October 2025.
Earlier that same day, at around 14:00, Anti-Gang Unit members deployed in the Lotus River, Grassy Park area received information about a firearm being stored at a house in Duiker Avenue. Acting swiftly, police searched the premises and its occupants. A 26-year-old man was found in possession of a revolver with five live rounds. He was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and was expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court today, 6 October 2025.
These successful operations once again highlight SAPS’s commitment to removing illegal firearms from communities and restoring peace and safety.
