Louis Lategan faced the Makhanda High Court yesterday, accused of luring young women to his Eastern Cape farm, under false pretences and sexually assaulting them.

Makhanda, Eastern Cape:-  Farmer Louis Lategan appeared in the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court yesterday, as prosecutors outlined shocking allegations against him.

He is accused of recruiting young women with promises of au‑pair work and attractive salaries, only for them to report being drugged, confined, and sexually assaulted once they arrived at his farm near Aberdeen.

Police reports indicate that several items were seized from Lategan’s home and vehicle, including sex toys, lubricants, a foot‑massage machine, and a so‑called “sex spray”. These items are cited as part of the evidence supporting the victims’ accounts.

According to the state, six women were allegedly lured to the farm over the past few years. One reportedly became pregnant, and tragically, another later took her own life. In addition to sexual assault, Lategan faces charges of human trafficking, child labour, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and intimidation.

Court proceedings

Bail was previously denied because the court considered him a flight risk and expressed concerns that he might interfere with witnesses.  During yesterday’s hearing, the defence raised claims that Lategan’s ex‑wife may have influenced the allegations, citing messages exchanged with one of the victims. Lategan pleads not guilty.

The trial continues as the State prepares to call its final witnesses and present further evidence.  The court has reminded the public that the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Why this case matters

The trial highlights serious issues around labour exploitation and sexual abuse in rural areas, where young women seeking employment are vulnerable. It also underscores the role of the justice system in addressing complex cases involving trafficking, sexual assault, and abuse of trust.

Community members and organisations are urged to be vigilant, particularly when recruitment occurs via online advertisements or agencies, to prevent potential exploitation.
