Cape Flats:- A Rastafarian family from Delft say they are “dik die hel in” after police allegedly stormed their home without a warrant, pepper-sprayed their 1-year-old baby, killed their dogs and stole R10 000 in cash.
Caroline Kampher says officers broke down their gate on Monday while looking for drugs. “They sprayed me and my baby. When my husband intervened, they sprayed him too,” she said.
The family claims about 30 officers and 16 vans arrived as backup, assaulting multiple family members – including a 19-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old boy. They allege a female cop smashed glasses over the teenager’s head and that the officers trashed their home, broke their phones and shot their dogs.
Five family members were arrested, sparking protests by the Rasta community who burnt tyres outside the Delft police station.
But when the group arrived in court on Tuesday, they were told there was no case.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the protest and said the five were arrested for dealing in dagga. Regarding the family’s allegations, he said any misconduct “is regarded as serious” and urged them to lay a formal complaint with Delft police management or IPID.
