Highlights Ongoing Gang Violence on Cape Flats
CCN Reporter
Cape Town:- A man has succumbed to his injuries after being shot in Hek Road, Lavender Hill, in what residents fear is the latest incident linked to persistent gang activity in the area.
According to community reports shared on local social media groups, the shooting occurred earlier today on Hek Road, a known hotspot in the gang-plagued suburb on the Cape Flats. The victim, described only as a male, was rushed to hospital but later passed away.
An update from a popular community WhatsApp group, “STORM Elsies Problems,” confirmed the tragic outcome: “The guy who was shot passed away in hospital. Condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
The post, accompanied by an image showing a gathering of residents and vehicles at the scene with Table Mountain in the background, carried a stark warning: “Please be careful when walking or driving through there #Chosen 1s Admins Cares.”
The hashtag appears to reference local gang affiliations, underscoring residents’ concerns about territorial disputes fueling such violence.
Lavender Hill has long been gripped by gang-related shootings, with community leaders repeatedly calling for increased police patrols and interventions.
This incident comes amid a broader surge in gang violence across the Cape Flats throughout 2025, where turf wars, extortion, and illegal firearms have contributed to hundreds of murders.
In a separate plea for help posted today, a resident from Joe Slovo in Milnerton highlighted escalating armed robberies in their area: “Robbers are all over with guns in hands. This morning they robbed a guy of his car… Yesterday they removed a lady’s clothes because they didn’t find anything with her.”
The resident urged police to patrol from Democracy Way to Hlosi Drive, describing the streets as “very dangerous” for pedestrians and drivers.
These reports paint a picture of communities living in fear, with calls for urgent action from authorities growing louder as the festive season approaches.
Police have yet to release an official statement on the Lavender Hill shooting, but investigations are believed to be underway.
Community safety forums and activists continue to demand sustained policing efforts, better resource allocation, and long-term strategies to address the root causes of gangsterism, including poverty and unemployment.
CCN extends condolences to the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time.
