CAPE TOWN:- Dozens of demonstrators marched through Sea Point on Youth Day, calling for stronger government action against undocumented immigration and prioritising South African citizens.
Organised by the anti-illegal immigration group March and March (also referred to as March to March), the protest drew a relatively small crowd of around 30 to 40 participants, despite a permit allowing for up to 500 people. Heavy police presence ensured the event remained peaceful with no reported incidents.
The march started near Fort Road on Beach Road, proceeded along the promenade, turned into St John’s Road, continued via Main Road, and concluded at the Mandela Glasses (Madiba Glasses) on Glengariff Road between approximately 9am and 3pm. Participants carried placards, waved South African flags, and chanted slogans demanding tighter border controls, the deportation of undocumented foreigners, and a crackdown on employers hiring undocumented workers.
A local organiser identified only as Charlie told reporters that foreigners were running businesses “like a cartel” and urged urgent intervention to address the influx of unauthorised immigrants.
The group has previously handed over a memorandum to Parliament and set a 30 June deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has warned that ongoing anti-immigrant protests could escalate into broader social unrest if not managed carefully.
Authorities, including SAPS and other stakeholders, have been coordinating responses to migration-related tensions.
The demonstration forms part of a series of actions by March and March across Cape Town and nationally, amid heightened public debate over immigration, unemployment, crime, and access to services.
Critics have raised concerns about potential xenophobia, while organisers emphasise their focus on legal immigration enforcement and peaceful advocacy.
Traffic disruptions were reported along the route, with residents and businesses advised in advance by the Sea Point City Improvement District.
