UPINGTON:- The Upington Division of the High Court has sentenced Chidi Emmanuel Okafor (38) to life imprisonment, for the murder of a police officer in Keimoes.
The crime took place in January 2020 when a police officer, attached to Upington Public Order Policing (POP), and his friend were attacked in their sleep by the accused. The officer lost his life due to a fatal stabbing, while his friend survived with severe injuries. Okafor was charged with housebreaking with intent to commit murder, attempted murder, and murder.
Following the brutal crime, the accused disappeared. The Upington Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit was tasked with tracking him down and investigating the case. The suspect was eventually located in Klerksdorp, where he was arrested and brought back for trial.
In August 2024, Okafor was found guilty, and on March 18, 2025, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder charge, along with an additional 10 years for attempted murder.
Both sentences will run concurrently.
