SALDANHA BAY:- In a political upset that has sent shockwaves through the West Coast and beyond, the MK Party (MKP) has unseated the ANC in the Saldanha Bay by-election, securing a historic victory in the squatter camp of Middelpos. 
Even more surprising, the party also clinched second place in Johannesburg’s by-elections, marking a significant milestone for the relatively young movement.
While MKP’s strong performance in Johannesburg was somewhat anticipated, their triumph in Saldanha Bay was a political curveball few saw coming. The area, particularly Middelpos, had been widely expected to fall into the hands of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), especially given their strong visibility in the region. Throughout the ongoing High Court case surrounding the disappearance of young Joshlin Smith, PA-branded t-shirts were frequently seen in television broadcasts, reinforcing the perception of their influence. Furthermore, PA leader Gayton McKenzie personally visited Middelpos, leading a prayer service for the missing child, further solidifying their presence.
With a by-election looming, many critics speculated that PA’s visibility around the case was timed to bolster electoral support. However, voters in Middelpos had different plans, delivering MKP a groundbreaking victory, and in doing so, shaking up the local political landscape.
This result has not only disrupted expectations but has also placed pressure on other political parties to reassess their strategies. The ANC, which previously held the ward until the passing of its councillor triggered the by-election, must now reflect on how it lost its footing in a historically stronghold area.
MKP’s victory underscores the unpredictability of South African politics and signals a shifting political dynamic in both local and national spheres.
