CAPE TOWN:- Two SAPS members from Cape Town have landed behind bars after being caught in separate incidents.
One for attempted hijacking and another for drug dealing, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting fresh concerns over corruption within the ranks.
Community Takes Down Off – Duty Cop in Makhaza
On Good Friday, chaos erupted in Makhaza when residents caught a man trying to hijack a Toyota Quantum in Lwesine Street. It was only after a heated chase and a community beating that the truth emerged — the suspect was an off-duty member of the Maitland Flying Squad.
He now faces charges of attempted carjacking and is expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court.
Drug Stash found in Kleinvlei Cop’s Home
The following day, the Anti-Gang Unit moved in on a home in Kleinvlei following a tip-off. The police uncovered a massive stash, 965 Mandrax pills, half pills, tik and a toy gun.
The man arrested is a court orderly attached to Cape Town Central SAPS. He was taken in for drug dealing and appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrates Court.
Accountability
Sources say the officer was previously suspected of smuggling during his time in the Metro K9 Unit, raising questions about SAPS management’s decision to place him in court duty with daily access to detainees. Residents and civic groups have since demanded full investigations, saying these arrests show how deep corruption may run in the justice system.
