CAPE TOWN:- The Western Cape has lost a giant in the fight against crime.

Major General (Ret) Andre Lincoln, a decorated and highly respected veteran of the South African Police Service (SAPS), passed away on the morning of Friday, 30 May 2025.

Known for his unwavering dedication to justice, General Lincoln served the nation for over 39 years. His long career was marked by milestones that made a lasting impact on both national security and community safety—particularly in the Western Cape.

In 1996, he was appointed as the Head of the Presidential Investigation Task Unit, a role that came after serving as one of late President Nelson Mandela’s trusted bodyguards. In later years, he rose through the ranks to become a Cluster Commander and eventually the Head of the Anti-Gang Unit, where he led SAPS initiatives aimed at dismantling gang networks in violence-plagued communities.

Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, expressed her heartfelt condolences to Lincoln’s family, friends, and colleagues.

“Major General Lincoln’s contribution to improving safety in the Western Cape will continue to form part of the legacy he leaves behind after serving in the SAPS for over 39 years. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time,” said Minister Marais.

General Lincoln was widely regarded as a disciplined, fearless, and principled officer who put community needs at the heart of policing. His leadership within the Anti-Gang Unit earned him both public admiration and the respect of his peers.

Tributes have already begun pouring in from across the country—from government officials and law enforcement agencies to ordinary citizens who saw him as a symbol of integrity in uniform.

As the Western Cape mourns one of its finest, the legacy of Major General Andre Lincoln will live on in the countless lives he touched and the safer communities he helped build.

Rest in power, General.
