Against Rising Crime and Attacks on Officers

The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, has voiced strong support for law enforcement officers who respond decisively and with authority in their fight against escalating crime.
His statement comes in the wake of several violent confrontations between criminals and police officers in various provinces, where dangerous offenders engage in deadly shootouts after committing serious crimes.
“In the face of attacks on police officers, the SAPS will continue to act decisively, using the powers granted to them under the law,” said General Masemola. He emphasized the role of law enforcement in defending the public and maintaining safety, while also condemning statements that appear to defend criminal behavior and the silence surrounding the deaths of police officers in the line of duty.
The Commissioner highlighted that 21 police officers have tragically lost their lives since April 2024, underscoring the need for continued public support for law enforcement. “The safety of the police and the community is paramount. The SAPS will continue to assert the authority of the State to combat lawlessness,” General Masemola stated.
Section 205 of the South African Constitution outlines the duties of the SAPS, including preventing and investigating crime, maintaining public order, and protecting citizens and their property. The police force has been working relentlessly, with notable success in its efforts. Through the high-density Operation Shanela, over 1.2 million arrests have been made for various crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, and armed robbery.
The SAPS continues to urge community members to report criminal activity and contribute to the fight against crime. Citizens are encouraged to contact their nearest police station, use the CrimeStop helpline at 08600 10111, or report anonymously via the MySAPSApp.
The Commissioner’s message is clear – the police will not back down in their mission to protect and serve, and the public’s role in supporting law enforcement is more crucial than ever.
