Beneath Bridge in Lansdowne
CCN Reporting
PHILIPPI:- The body.of 37-year-old Rushan Smith from HanoverPark was found under a bridge, still under construction near the intersection of Jan Smuts Avenue and Govan Mbeki Road on Wednesday night.
Philippi police have since opened a murder case, following allegations that Smith had been brutally attacked and beaten to death by a group of unknown assailants.
According to reports, Smith had been in the company of a man known to him—a HollywoodBets employee—when the two were targeted by the attackers. A family member, who asked not to be named, explained that Smith was unable to flee due to lasting injuries from a previous incident in which he was shot fifteen times.
“Because of those old wounds, he couldn’t move like others would. He might’ve fallen when they came at them,” the relative shared.
The suspects allegedly hurled bricks during the assault. Smith’s companion managed to escape, but Smith, unable to get away, was left vulnerable.
Police officers on routine patrol responded to the incident at approximately 9 PM. Upon arrival, they found Smith’s lifeless body and medical responders declared him deceased on the scene.
At this stage, no arrests have been made, and the motive remains unclear. Police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information. Tip-offs can be shared anonymously via Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS mobile app.
