Extensive Manhunt Launched

Cape Town:- A chilling massacre left seven young men dead on Friday night in a home on Road 53, Better Life, Philippi East, and authorities have launched a wide-ranging manhunt.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape, the victims were aged between 20 and 30. The incident occurred in the late evening, and the scale and brutal nature of the attack have prompted detectives from the provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit to prioritise the investigation.
Police say that once on the scene they found the bodies of the seven men inside a house: one in a front room, six others in a bedroom. The room showed signs of smoke damage and evidence the perpetrators attempted to burn the victims. A strong smell of smoke lingered at the scene.
According to the homeowner, who rents out the property, the house was occupied by people (his tenants) from the Eastern Cape working as insurance sales agents. He was alerted that the house was burning; upon arrival he saw a man on the floor bleeding, realised multiple men were inside, and called police.
SAPS spokesperson Col. André Traut said detectives “are pursuing every available lead to identify and apprehend those responsible for this brutal attack.” Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen. Thembisile Patekile condemned the killings and emphasised that community cooperation is crucial to restoring safety in the area.
Meanwhile, Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais described the killings as a “devastating reminder of the scale of violence tearing through Cape Town’s townships.” She said, “These are not just random acts of violence. They are coordinated, violent assaults on communities already under siege.”
Community reaction
The local community was left reeling. Ward councillor Zukisani Sophazi, speaking from the scene, said the attack had deeply traumatised residents. “Unfortunately, no one ever wants to come forward to tell the police who is committing these crimes. I understand that they are scared, but we need to work together,” she said.
One resident (preferring anonymity) said:
“We could hear the noise, and then in the morning we saw the place smouldering… it’s like a war zone. We’re scared to talk. Who can protect us if we speak up?”
