In a rain-affected ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 match at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, South Africa’s Proteas Women delivered a commanding performance to defeat Pakistan by 150 runs via the DLS method.
This victory propels them to the top of the points table, marking their fifth consecutive win in the tournament.
Marizanne Kapp Leads the Charge
All-rounder Marizanne Kapp was the standout performer for South Africa. She contributed an unbeaten 68 runs to the team’s total of 312/9 in their allotted 40 overs. Kapp also shone with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 20 runs, significantly reducing Pakistan’s chase to a revised target of 234 runs in just 20 overs.
Wolvaardt and Luus Provide Solid Support
Opening batter Laura Wolvaardt anchored the innings with a well-played 90 runs, while captain Sune Luus added a valuable 61 runs. Their contributions were instrumental in setting a formidable total despite the challenging conditions.
Pakistan’s Struggle in the Chase
Pakistan’s chase was hampered by early breakthroughs from the Proteas bowlers. Kapp’s incisive opening spell reduced Pakistan to 35/4, and despite a late resistance from Nida Dar, who remained unbeaten on 22*, the team could only manage 83/7 in their 20 overs, falling short of the revised target.
Proteas Women Top the Points Table
With this decisive win, South Africa now lead the Women’s Cricket World Cup standings with 10 points from six matches. They have temporarily displaced Australia and England, both on 9 points, who are scheduled to face each other in their upcoming match.
Looking Ahead
The Proteas Women will face defending champions Australia in their final league match on Saturday, October 25, in Indore. This encounter is expected to be a crucial test of their championship credentials as they aim to secure a top position heading into the knockout stages.
With momentum on their side and confidence soaring, the Proteas Women are poised to continue their impressive run in the tournament.
