If we want our next generation to survive, we must act – together.

South AFRICA:- Too often we hear adults say, “Children these days have no manners.”
But before we judge them, we must ask ourselves: have we given them what every child needs, attention, love, guidance and someone who will listen?
According to a recent feature on eNCA News, Childline Gauteng receives high volumes of calls daily. Children phone because they are frightened, overwhelmed, confused or desperate – not always for food or money, but for something deeper: A voice that hears them – A heart that cares.
Provincial Manager Sandy Mahapi explained how counsellors patiently create emotional safety, giving children the space to talk, cry, breathe, and feel worthy. Many calls come from children who feel alone, ignored, unloved or misunderstood.
- And here in our own communities, we see it too.
- Kids roaming the streets.
- Teens joining gangs for belonging.
- Young ones acting out in anger – but inside?
- Just a child asking: “Do you see me?”
Children don’t become broken overnight.
A child raised with love grows differently from a child raised with shouting, silence, or fear.
A child with attention becomes confident.
A child with guidance becomes responsible.
A child who is heard becomes a better person tomorrow – This is a plea – A serious one.
- To parents.
- To grandparents.
- To youth leaders.
- To schools and NGOs.
- To community WhatsApp groups and faith organisations.
If we want the next generation to survive – we MUST invest in them now.
- Talk to a child.
- Listen without judging.
- Create safe spaces.
- Teach them respect, but show them respect too.
- Give them purpose. Give them hope.
Our children are not problems to fix – they are futures to protect.
- Let us start right here where we live.
- Let us rebuild the village that raises a child.
- Let us stand together and break the cycle of hurt, crime and hopelessness – not in 10 years, but today.
Because when we guide a child, we save a life.
When we believe in a child, we change a generation.
