ATLANTIS:- The deadly shooting at the Witsands Taxi Rank in Atlantis has left the local community in shock and mourning, following an incident not fully confirmed by police.
According to community reports circulating online, two individuals were shot late last night at the taxi rank in Witsands, Atlantis. One victim, a man believed to be associated with a local taxi association, possibly as a driver, was fatally wounded and declared dead at the scene.
The second victim, described as a taxi operator from Witsand, was rushed to hospital for treatment, though updates on their condition remain limited at this stage.
Community members allege the victims were linked to taxi operations in the area, amid ongoing tensions in the minibus taxi industry that have plagued parts of the Western Cape, including Atlantis. No official motive has been released by authorities, and police investigations are underway to determine the circumstances, including whether the shooting was targeted or related to broader disputes.
The Atlantis community has been urged to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and avoid the area if possible while the situation unfolds. Social media posts from residents express deep sorrow and calls for peace, with many turning to faith amid the tragedy.
One community member commented: “It’s really sad to see and hear how we as people destroy ourselves in life and forget that only God, the one and only, can heal our souls.”
Another added: “GOD protect our people please so sad yo.”
A local resident shared: “The other 1 passed in hospital my neighbor in my street,” with confirmation from another: “Confirmed.”
This incident highlights persistent challenges in the region’s taxi sector, where rivalries and violence have led to similar fatal shootings in recent years.
